There is no one answer. Most people feel more hopeful and think more clearly within a few months. Some folks get what they need in 5-10 sessions, others benefit from regular support over several months to a year, and those dealing with trauma or chronic mental health challenges often do well with weekly sessions for 6 months to a year.

Child and Adolescent Therapy FAQ
-
A referral is not required to receive psychological services from Frank Psychology.

The first session is usually spent with the parents/guardians to discuss current concerns and gather necessary background information. Depending on the age of the child/youth, this information will be shared in a developmentally appropriate manner to seek their perspective on the current situation.
If this is your first time booking an individual session for your child or adolescent: Please select Adolescent-Initial Consultation when booking.

No. One parent/guardian can attend on their own.
If parents/guardians are separated or divorced, a copy of the court order highlighting parental rights is needed. This is to ensure a court order is not in place that specifically addresses or impacts the issue of consent for a minor. A copy of the order can be emailed to info@frankpsychology.com or brought to your first session.
-
After the first session, your psychologist will offer initial impressions and make recommendations, and together you will decide on a treatment approach. You can decide with the psychologist how often you would like to be updated about your child’s progress, and can request parent updates to be scheduled at regular intervals, or family therapy, depending on the need.
-
It is important for your child to feel a strong sense of trust and therapeutic alliance with their psychologist; therefore, not all details about conversations will be disclosed to the family. Parents/guardians will be updated around themes and general impressions, and there are certain limits to confidentiality that will be explained to you and your child during the first session. If your child discloses information that leads your psychologist to be concerned about safety, your child’s or someone else’s, your child will be encouraged to share concerns directly with you during family therapy. If this skill is being worked on and communication is not yet open, your psychologist will update you immediately and your psychologist will facilitate safety planning with your child.
